We are very pleased to present the Director of Education’s Annual Report for the 2021-2022 school year.
We thank our Board of Trustees, Senior Administration, staff, students, families, volunteers, community partners, and our parishes for their continued support and commitment to Sudbury Catholic. Together we are providing a caring, progressive, high quality Catholic school system that is nurturing our students – mind, body, and spirit.
Staff and students at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board raised $1,923.10 to support the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee. Leaves of Change: Binaakwe Giizis is a fundraiser which took place on October 14, 2022, to promote environmental stewardship.
The goal of the fundraiser is to engage in civic and environmental responsibility by bringing attention to climate change and better understand how we can protect the earth for future generations. Throughout the day and the month of October, students and staff are encouraged to make more sustainable efforts. This includes cleaning green spaces by picking up trash and litter, recycling, using a reusable water bottle and reducing day to day waste, where possible.
In addition, October is known as Binaakwe Giizis – Moon of Falling Leaves. The fundraiser also served as an educational opportunity to understand, acknowledge, and respect Indigenous perspectives on caring for Mother Earth (Shkagamik Kwe).
“As a school board, it is our responsibility to create opportunities that teach the importance of protecting the earth for future generations.Environmental degradation affects the health and well-being of all peoples of North America and the world in many ways. By participating in this fundraiser, and the many planned activities, we help our community engage in volunteerism and create hope through environmental restoration,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.
On Friday, October 14th, 2022, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is inviting students and staff from all sites to increase their civic responsibility by participating in a fall fundraiser that gives back to the local green space!
SCDSB Leaves of Change will recognize climate change during the changing season, as well as provide a teaching opportunity for Indigenous Education and caring for Shkagamik Kwe (mother earth). On this day, students/staff are encouraged to wear fall colours (red, yellow, orange, green, purple, and/or brown) and donate a toonie, where possible, to support the continued efforts of the Junction Creek Stewardship Community in Sudbury. The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee is an integral part of the Greater Sudbury community, working to improve the health of the unique urban waterway that connects us all and to promote the livability and value of our natural environment.

For instance, industrial contamination and disruption of wildlife habitats combine to reduce the supply and purity of clean drinking water, traditional foods, and medicines. In addition, environmental degradation erodes the quality of life dependent on the purity of the land, water, flora and fauna. Further, this disruption greatly affects Indigenous peoples culture, languages, spiritual health, and well-being along with the life of all living things. By participating in this fundraiser, we help our community engage in volunteerism and create hope through environmental restoration.
Congratulations to Mrs. Beaton and her Kindergarten class for their grant proposal being accepted by WWF-Canada! Pius XII School has been awarded one of WWF-Canada’s Go Wild School Grants. This Spring, the school will work towards transforming their courtyard into an outdoor learning space where the Pius community can connect with nature and nurture Indigenous teachings!

Everyday is Earth Day at Pius XII Catholic Elementary School! Throughout the school year students, staff, parents and community partners have been involved in many ongoing environmental projects. Pius XII students continue to have garbage free lunch days, collecting old and used batteris, cellphones, ink cartridges, and juice pouches. This month, Pius XII students have begun planting Cosmos and Morning Glory flowers that will be donated to Minnow Lake Restoration group, who will then plant them in the surrounding Minnow Lake Area. The Grade 5 class is the school’s Dearness Conservation Lead Team and came up with the idea of reusing yogurt containers from Tasty Tuesdays as a mini-pot to plant the seeds and giving back the flowers to brighten up the community. A special thank you goes out to John Lindsey, Chair of Minnow Lake Community Action Network and President of the Minnow Lake Restoration Group and Dominique Viau for their generous donation of seeds.
The Grade 5 ‘Dearness Conservation’ students at Pius XII Catholic Elementary School are collecting used batteries that the students have brought in as part of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board Environmental Policy, “Catholic education is to encourage students and staff to develop respect for the environment and become committed to the wise use of resources” as well as promote and foster “the concept of the stewardship of the earth.” Classroom teacher, Amanda Schiafone, states the importance of the program at the school. Schiafone says that ‘our school participates in many activities/events throughout the school year, such the ‘3 R’s’, energy conservation, litterless lunches and many more, however, I am very impressed with all the support from students and parents from our battery recycling collection’. To this date, the students at Pius have brought in 2,286 batteries! The students will continue collecting batteries until June 1st.
Pius XII Catholic School, Grade 5 class celebrate National Tree Day on September 26th. The students in the Gr.5 class lead the school in ‘Dearness Conservation’ initiatives that support, promote and foster stewardship fo the earth and the wise use of resources; such as recycling, reusing and reducing. Classroom teacher, Amanda Schiafone says that “National Tree Day is a day when everybody can appreciate the great benefits that trees provide us – clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand and connecting with all of nature around us.”
Pius XII got ready to celebrate Earth Day recently by hosting its 5th Eco-Chic Clothing Swap.
This year, a new element was introduced, books!! There was an amazing amount of student involvement. Participants were excited to recommend their previously loved items to classmates. The swap was a great success and reinforced the importance of all of the environmental R’s, Reduce, Re-use and Recycle!
Pius XII Catholic School was proclaimed as the winner of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s 2006-2007 Conservation Challenge. Board Chair, Paula Peroni presented the Pius XII Catholic School students with a $500 cheque and a specially designed banner which will be displayed at the school for one year as part of the Grand Prize. The presentation was made during the last Board meeting before the summer break.
The School Conservation Challenge was created by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board to increase the participation in the Dearness Conservation Initiative that was introduced into all of the Board’s schools in 2001. Since the inception of the DC program, the Board has been able to achieve substantial utility savings by educating teachers, students and staff and providing them with the necessary resources through this program.
To help revitalize the program in 2006-2007, senior administration decided that a “Conservation Challenge” would be an excellent way to enhance the effectiveness of the program in addition to acknowledging the “Environmental Champions.”
The selection of the 2006-2007 School Conservation Champion involved a point system based on three categories; (i) an unannounced site visit by the SCDSB’s Facility Services Department, during the visit specific items were identified and reported with each school receiving a certain number of points (ii) an interview was conducted with the principal from each participating school. Based on the answers from the school principal, each school received points from the questionnaire (iii) In late May, schools were requested to submit reports dealing with Lifestyle Conservation Campaigns and other relevant materials such as videos/newsletters/announcements and presentations. Schools were awarded points based on their submitted materials. Pius XII Catholic School was chosen as the Grand Prize Winner based on the school that had accumulated highest total points in the three evaluations.
The students of Pius XII Catholic School are keen and green in keeping the planet, the environment and the school clean by undertaking major recycling efforts. “Our students believe the recycling is fun and it means they have to use their imagination in developing their ‘Al the Can Man’ projects,” states the school’s Vice-Principal, Carmela Pitman.
Students decorated a pop can or bottle using recyclable materials. They received certificates and recognition for their efforts in recycling, reducing and reusing.
